ELIZABETH HAMSTEAD 1720
English sampler very finely stitched with silk threads on a linen ground, consisting of seven rows of alphabet and numerals, a six line pious verse and seven rows of assorted floral pattern bands. At the bottom, above the attribution and date, is a row of unusual stylized trees interspersed with crowns. Stitches used in the sampler are cross, counted satin and eyelet. It is in very good condition, very good color, with some minor staining and one small hole at the left of the sixth pattern band. The sampler has been mounted over linen in a modern frame. 14″ x 9. The verse is:
O all ye nations of the world * Praise ye the Lord always * And all ye people every where set forth his noble name * For great his kindness is to us his truth doth not decay * Wheresoever praise ye the Lord our God and praise ye the Lord alway.
