A fabulous English sampler in remarkable condition, full of gorgeous, unique (and even strange) beautifully executed motifs. At the top is a two-storied house with a pair of couples on either side enclosed in leafy bowers. Below the house are Adam and Eve flanked by archaic “boxers” and large peacocks. Thickly stemmed flowers reminiscent of seventeenth-century slips follow, and at the bottom, she has stitched two extraordinary creatures: a winged blue dragon and a lion rampant.
The sampler is in excellent condition, apart from three minor holes along the right edge. The color is superb, and the veneered frame is possibly original.
The sampler measures 20″ x 13″, with the frame it is 25″ x 18″
