Description

MP dated 1733
The English sampler underwent a dramatic transformation in the second quarter of the eighteenth century as its form gradually followed its evolving function.  Its seventeenth-century function was primarily as a pattern record.  This example, dated 1733, leans anachronistically to the previous century where many English samplers, beginning much earlier in the century, were created as frameable art in their own right.  This sampler illustrates many traditional seventeenth-century techniques and designs.  Stitches used are double running/back stitch, counted satin, eyelet, cross, and petit point, and the traditional double running stitch motifs include clasped hands, stars, strawberries, pansies, artichokes, and a wonderful big green frog.  On 30 count linen, the reproduction will be almost the same size as the original antique sampler- 9″ x 18″. This is an excellent project for those interested in learning seventeenth-century needlework techniques.  The pattern is easy to follow in full color, the stitches are not complicated and are clearly diagrammed.  It is recommended for any skill level.
