Description
ENGLISH TRANSITIONAL SAMPLER
circa 1711
The original sampler from which this chart was created is undated but two others quite similar have passed through the collection of The Scarlet Letter over the years. All three of these samplers have had similar horizontal pattern bands, a panel of mixed bargello (Florentine) work, they have all retained brilliant color, employ a wide variety of stitches and are alike in their proportions: vertical but much less band shaped, tending more toward square. The other two examples were dated 1711 and 1712, but tended to be more alphabetical and verse oriented, whereas the example reproduced here shows stronger carryovers in design from the seventeenth century. The original sampler retains intense color, as reproduced here.
Stitches used are cross, rice, Florentine (flame stitch), queen, counted satin, double running, back, bullion knots and stem filling. On 40 count linen the reproduction will be the same size as the original sampler: 13″ x 15-1/2″. The project is recommended for more advanced needle workers.
The kits include the graph, linen, all embroidery flosses, and a needle.
