Description
ENGLISH BAND SAMPLER, circa 1690-1705
It is executed in a wide variety of stitches including double running, cross, buttonhole, detached buttonhole, counted satin, back, montenegrin cross, eyelet and herringbone, with silk on fine linen.
There are four alphabets in the lower section. Figural double running stitch motifs include “boxers”, stags, rabbits, birds, frogs and insects. The repeating horizontal bands incorporate traditional shapes such as daisies, artichokes and thistles.
It is in very good condition (no holes or stains), with just some darkening of the linen and fading of the silk. (White flecks visible in some photos are caused by glare on the glass.)
The frame is much later. 9-1/2″ x 26″
