Description

The original sampler, made in England in 1848, was stitched with cross, counted satin, petit point, and eyelet stitches on an extremely fine glazed linen of approximately fifty threads per inch.

It is unusual to find such a meticulously and finely stitched sampler at this late date, when coarser fabrics and threads were more commonly used. Most interesting is the detailed band of holly and berries stitched across the center of the sampler. The border flowers are filled in with counted thread satin stitches, and the tiny vignettes of Adam and Eve are done in petit point (cross stitch over one thread of linen).

On 40 count linen, which was used to stitch the cover model, the finished sampler will measure approximately 15” x 15-½”. It is recommended for intermediate level needleworkers.
