Description

An English sampler stitched with silk threads on a fine tammy (wool) ground, with a three-sided floral border (the fourth border possibly missing), including two rows of alphabets and numerals, stitched in cross and petit point stitches. Flanking the verse are two images of Solomon’s Temple, trees, and birds.

The verse:
THE LOVE OF PRAISE
Of all the springs within the mind
Which prompt her steps in fortune’s maze
From none more pleasing aide we find
Then from the love of praise.
Not any partial private end
Such reverence to the publick bears
Nor any passion virtue’s friend
So like to virtue’s self appears.
If praise with deep religious awe
From the sole perfect judge be sought
A nobler and a purer law
Nor priest nor bard nor sage hath taught.

Very good color, many holes (backed by linen), ground puckered, 20th-century frame in fair condition.

The sampler measures 14-1/2″ x 15″, with the frame 18-1/2″ x 19″
