JENNY STUTAFORD 1795

Some of the strangest Adam and Eve figures were represented on samplers in the 18th century in England, and this one ranks right up there with their blobby white gobelin-stitched bodies and furry stem stitched oversized fig leaves. The sampler has a gorgeous double sided floral border, the color is still brilliant, encompassing the central reserve with a seven line verse above the bloated Adam and Eve, saluting the serpent coiling up the satin stitched tree.

We from the stock of Adam came
Unholy and unclean
All our original is shame
And all our nature sin
Let not the spirit yet depart
Nor drive us from thy face
Create a new each vicious heart
And form it with thy grace

The sampler itself measures 14-1/2″ x 11-1/4″, with the frame (which is beautiful but probably not contemporary with the sampler) 18-1.2″ x 15″.

Apart from seven very minor holes, the sampler and its color are in very good condition.

More quirky Adam and Eves appear on other samplers from the same period including these from The Scarlet Letter:
