Description
ELIZABETH ROBERTSON 1822
An English or possibly Scottish sampler
The sampler displays several design characteristics that suggest it was made in Scotland including the arcaded pansy band in the upper third register, the peacocks with seven tail feathers, the tiered evergreen trees and the somewhat abbreviated mansion house, set on an unusual and extraordinary checkered lawn.
Flying cherubs hold a banner extolling god in the top center. The unusually fluid floral border is unique.
The sampler is executed in cross, counted satin, petit point and eyelet stitches. It is framed in a relatively modern maple veneer frame which is in excellent condition. There are some minor holes and staining in the sampler visible in the photos. At one time it must have been folded. Fading is minimal. The sampler itself measures 17″ x 11″, with the frame 19-1/2″ x 14″.
