DUTCH SAMPLER DATED 1794

This sampler features many traditional Dutch sampler motifs quirkily arranged with the letters of the alphabet interspersed among them. Motifs include the Spies of Canaan, Adam and Eve, cherubs and trumpeting angels, a sailing ship, Justice with her scales and sword, the lamb of god, a black rooster, and a miniature village scene with a church.

Stitches used include, cross, eyelet, satin and running, in shades of blue, gold, brown, black, red, green and peach silks.

The condition is very good, although somewhat faded, now in a 20th century frame.

The sampler itself measures 12-1/2″ x 11″, with the frame it measures 14-1/2″ x 13-1/4″.
