Description

ALLISON TURNBULL dated 1770

This is an English “tablet” type sampler, the format influenced by the painted sign boards that hung in many parish churches often with the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer or other biblical texts painted and arranged on them in a tablet type format.

Here the commandments are enclosed within cross stitched tablets flanked by satin stitched architectural columns and surrounded by a floral border. The verse after the commandments was found in old school copy books and educational primers such as Rev. Thomas Dyche’s A Guide to the English Tongue (London, 1707).

On 35 count linen the finished sampler will measure approximately 17″ x 18″. Stitches used are cross, cross over one, and counted satin. Cross stitch can be used as a substitute for the counted satin stitches in the columns.

Kits include linen, full color graph, embroidery floss (19 colors), and needle: everything needed to complete the sampler.
