AGNES WILSON 1819

Scottish sampler made in St. Andrew’s, stitched with silk threads of fine linen beginning with a verse:

Let not soft slumber close mine eyes * Before I’ve recollected thrice * the train of actions thro the day * where have my feet chose out thair way * What have I learn’d where’er I’ve been * From all I’ve heard from all I’ve seen * What know I more thats worth the knowing * What have I done thats worth the doing * What have I sought that I should shun * What duty have I left undone * These self inquires are the road * That leads to virtue and to God

Adam and Eve stand beneath the tree surrounded by peacocks, lions, rabbits, flowering trees, crowns and pots of flowers. Family initials are recorded below the verse, all beautifully illuminated with double running stitch.

The sampler has been mounted over linen and has a modern frame (no glass). Apart from some color fade it is in very good condition. 17-1/2″ x 13″
