Sohpia Irish 1819
Worked at M. Newick’s school, Hinton St. George, when she was eight years old, this sampler features two large flying cherubs above the Lord’s Prayer, which is flanked by pillars covered with twining ivy, two large potted trees. Scattered about are various motifs including crowns, hearts, birds, trees, diamonds, and at the bottom a miniature representation of Solomon’s Temple. Stitches used in the sampler are cross, satin, and petit point. The measurements are 13″ x 16″. There is one small hole in the lower right corner, and three small areas where the linen has thinned. The overall color and condition is very good.
