Sarah Finchett – circa 1810

SARAH FINCHETT, circa 1810

The sampler is probably American, made in Liverpool (possibly New York) by the daughter of John and Ellen Finchett.

On homespun linen, stitched with silk threads, a four sided floral border encloses a verse and a scene with a large brick house flanked by flowers, trees, a black dog,and a black urn under a willow tree with the initials “IF” (possibly JF, her father?) on it.

Stitches used are cross, stem, counted and freehand satin and queen. The color is very good. It has been mounted over linen and framed with conservation glass. Rust marks from the original mounting nails are visible on three sides. There is one hole above the roof of the house and some deterioration of the linen in the lower and upper right corners.

The sampler itself measures 15-1/2″ x 12-3/4″, with the frame is is 18-1/2″ x 15-3/4″
