Description

An American Quaker sampler from the collection of the Shelburne Museum. This plain Quaker sampler is beautiful in its simplicity and straightforwardness. Classic Quaker school Roman style needlework lettering, starkly monochromatic, is topped by a delicate vining arch. The principles upon which the Quakers based their educational philosophy were equality, simplicity, and peace, all reflected in this simple yet strikingly elegant needlework exercise. Excessive ornamentation was discouraged so the addition of the little lions and flowers at the bottom is a sweet, childish touch to an otherwise rather pedantic sewing lesson.
