Description

This highly unusual memorial sampler features a chapel and a churchyard, with an elegy to Mary Platt’s deceased father. Stitched entirely in cross stitch, the stark, evocative design is striking and appropriately reflects Mary’s grief at the loss of her father. The chapel is identified as “Providence Chapel” built in 1806. The relatively new churchyard is not yet overly populated. Mary depicts only a few graves there. This is the verse:

IN MEMORY OF AN AFFECTIONATE FATHER WHO DEPARTED THIS
LIFE JUNE 12th 1835 IN THE 45th YEAR OF HIS AGE…
Ah is it true and is my father dead
Are all the charms with his sweet spirit fled
And do those cheeks where rosy hues did play
Exhibit nought but cold and lifeless clay
And all is true no one his life could save
And now he lies within his silent grave
Lamented by the good and every friend
Who griev’d sincerely when they saw
His end in Providence Chapel Yard
His laid his corps where many a
Friend shall stand in deep remorse
While from each eye shall start the
Rolling tear of deep respect
His Memory to Revere.

On 35 count linen the reproduction sampler will measure approximately 16-1/4″ x 21-1/4″. The original sampler measures 17″ x 22-1/2″. Only cross stitch is used to stitch this sampler, recommended for any skill level.
