Description

Originally stitched on dark green linsey-woolsey, our reproduction of Mary Jones’s sampler is worked on our exclusive evenweave linen, dyed the same color. The striking contrast between the colors of the embroidery floss and the dark linen ground result in a dramatic finished piece, particularly in the region of the bright firmament complete with stars, sun and moon, above the childish figures of Adam and Eve. The verse is as follows:

Adam and Eve while innocent In Paradise were Placed
But soon the serpent by his wiles The happy pair disgraced
MARY JONES IS MY name New York is my station
Heaven is my dwelling place And Christ is my salvation
When I am dead laid in my grave and all my bones are rotten
When this you see Remember me that I be not forgotten
August 14 AD 1801 and in the 15th year of America’s Independence

Stitches used in the sampler are cross, cross stitch over one thread of linen, and stem (for the serpent).
