English samplers of this century are among the finest examples of this needle art form. An exquisite combination of Renaissance-influenced, intricate pattern bands executed in a variety of stitch techniques, along with beautifully nuanced colors, resulted in a group of distinguished works that were made by young and adult women alike.

Lydia Prat Hersam’s early sampler is decorated with repeating classical motifs, their origins in the art of earlier centuries.

Stitches used are primarily double running and back, with some four-sided, cross, Montenegrin cross, eyelet, petit point and counted satin.

If stitched on 32 count linen the reproduction will most closely approximate the size of the original antique- 8-1/4″ x 21-1/4″.
