Description
Judging by the style of the lettering, this partial reproduction was probably worked originally in the mid 18th century. According to Marcus Huish (Samplers and Tapestry Embroideries), the first documented border enclosing a sampler was worked in 1726. Illuminated lettering similar to that found on this sampler occurs on other Scottish samplers. Unfortunately, the lower portion of the original Knox Family sampler is illegible. The scene at the bottom is an addition by The Scarlet Letter. We feel that this tranquil scene blends sympathetically with the overall design. This is an ambitious sampler.
