Description

JENET WEIR circa 1760

A Scottish sampler done in rich shades of red, green, blue, gold, brown and peach, with three alphabets, two of them beautifully illuminated in double running stitch. There are numerous family initials worked around the sampler. Stitches used are cross, double running and counted satin. A faded label on the back indicates that the frame was made in Edinburgh, but it is probably not original to the piece (late 19th or early 20th century possibly). Excellent color and condition, with just minor darkening of the linen ground.

The sampler itself measures 10″ x 12-1/4″, with the frame 14″ x 16″.
