Description
This beautiful English sampler was originally stitched on fine linen with silk threads, in gros and petit point stitches (i.e. cross stitch over one and two threads of linen), and a small number of straight stitches. A four sided arcaded meandering floral border surrounds two sections, the upper featuring a stylized spotted leopard flanked by trees and birds, the lower scene with a verse within a cartouche composed of linked crosses, surrounded by birds and stags. The words inside the cartouche read:
Hannah Brassington Her Sampler Work’d in
the Eleventh Year of Her Age April the Tenth 1779
Love god above
All Things
Above and as thy
Self thy neighbor

Self thy neighbor
Stitched on 40 count linen, the reproduction sampler will very closely approximate the size of the original: 14-1/2″ x 18″. The sampler is recommended for intermediate level needleworkers.
