Description

LATE 1800 AMERICAN CANVASWORK POCKETBOOK FROM THE COLLECTION OF SHELBURNE MUSEUM

Adapted from a late 18th century pocketbook in the collection of the Shelburne Museum. This very unusual optical design pocketbook was irregularly stitched (we have charted it more regularly than the original, which was rather crudely designed and executed but was nonetheless quite beautiful) entirely in Irish stitch, except for the initials and the background of the initials, which was cross stitched.

Origin and date: American 18th century
Linen count and finished size: 35-count linen, the reproduction measures approximately 10-1/2″x6″ when opened completely and laid flat
Stitches: Entirely Irish stitch with initials in eyelet
Source: Shelburne Museum
