Description
FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE
FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND
An unusual four-sided counted satin stitch border surrounds two verses and the Lord’s Prayer on this finely preserved English Sampler. At least two other very similar samplers are known to us, suggesting the existence of a teacher who was a proponent of this sampler format. One is pictured in Samplers by Averil Colby, fig. 106, worked by Mary Whitehead in 1740; the other is ex-collection The Scarlet Letter, with a nearly identical scene of hillocks and birds as well as the same border, by Elinor Brown and dated 1733.
