Description

BETSY ADAMS circa 1770

This sampler was designed after a piece stitched in eastern Massachusetts in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. It incorporates many traditional sampler motifs popular during that century including a Greek fretwork border, vine, carnation and tulip borders, distinctive “crab” like flowers in the inner border, and a rather morose verse:

Time has Wings and swiftly flies
Youth and Beauty fade away
Virtue is the only prize Whose
Sacred joys will ne’er decay

Stitches used in this reproduction sampler include cross over one and two threads of linen, sawtooth satin, mosaic filling, and counted satin. On 35 count linen the finished sampler will measure approximately 11″ x 16″. It is recommended for intermediate level needle workers.
