Needlework Pictures

The designs in this category are inspired by and reproduced from early English tent stitched pictures, often executed in tent stitch, or full cross stitches. These are magnificent examples of “needle painting” with the meticulous use of subtly shaded silk threads on a linen ground. The exuberant and exotic scenes often illustrate creatures foreign to the English people in the late 17th and early 18th centuries lions, elephants, spotted tigers, whales, peacocks, parrots, all very popular with the upper middle class audience who were intrigued by the amazing discoveries being made by explorers and men of science.
