Martha Whitworth 1819

MARTHA WHITWORTH 1819

An English sampler with a four-sided artichoke-like border with a verse, flanked by outsized stylized flowers and leaves.

The verse is:
Be Christ my pattern and my guide
This image may I bear
O may I tread his sacred steps
And his bright glories share

Below the date, she has stitched a woman in a trailing gown. Centered beneath the verse is a beautiful rose stitched above a stone building, with large angels and pots of flowers on either side. The cushion moulded rosewood frame is likely original.

Stitches used are cross, herringbone, petit point, and chain.

The sampler is in very good condition; only the linen is somewhat darkened. 17″ 17″, with the frame 22″ x 22″.
