Martha Bailey 1856

This Antique is SOLD.

English house sampler stitched in brightly colored wool and silk floss on linen featuring a very large mansion house with four chimneys flanked by stylized evergreen trees and fences, over an expansive lawn with two dogs. The verse reads:

As with a swiftly flowing stream.
The sons of men are borne away.
They vanish as a passing dream.
And as the grass they soon decay.

Worked in cross stitch and framed in a period birdseye maple frame with gilt liner, the samplers appears to be conservation mounted over cotton muslin with spacers. There are some small losses to the wool in the lawn and to the left side of the house, otherwise it is in very good condition. 21″ x 21″ sampler alone, 23-1/2″ x 23-1/2″ with frame.
