Maria Tomlinson 1841
This English sampler features a fine country house identified as Wilton House in Wiltshire, near Salisbury, the county seat of the Earls of Pembroke for over four hundred years. Many people may recognize it from scenes filmed there such as “The Madness of King George” (1994), “Pride and Prejudice” (2005), “The Young Victoria” (2009), and in every episode of the current series “The Crown” where its Double Cube Room represents one of the formal rooms at Buckingham Palace. The sampler has a four sided strawberry border enclosing the elaborately executed house. Beneath the house are stylized gardens with dogs, rabbits, birds, trees, and a pair of gate houses connected by fine gates and paths. The simple verse is:
Let my mouth be filled with thy praise
And with thy honour all my days
Stitches used are cross, petit point, counted satin and tent. Unframed, the sampler measures 20″ x 23″, and is in very good condition.
