Margaret Walker, circa 1800

This is an English or Scottish sampler completed April 18 (no year noted) stitched with silk threads on homespun linen, incorporating cross, eyelet, four sided and petit point stitches.

The unusual borders are composed of alphabets, numerals and sets of initials. The two large alphabets are executed in four sided and eyelet stitches. Five crowns are stitched below the alphabets each with initials beneath it. The lower register consists of a house with two side wings, baskets of fruits or flowers, birds and a dog.

The sampler itself measures 13-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, with the 20th century frame 11″ x 15-1/2″. The condition is good/very good, with a few minor losses to the stitches in one of the flower baskets, as well as some fading.
