Margarat Mure

Very finely stitched Scottish sampler featuring the traditional mansion house seen on so many Scottish samplers of this period, with an extensive garden and stone walls. It is curiously flanked by an exotic cow and a soldier. There is a four-sided floral border executed in cross and double running stitches. Above the house is an unprecedented 13-eyed peacock flanked by flying doves. Adam and Eve (designated as “A” and “E”) appear on either side pointing to green hillocks sporting trees typically Scottish in design. The sampler is full of family initials and many other details seen on Scottish samplers of the 18th century. Sadly the sampler has suffered loss to the ground but the color remains vivid.

The verse is:

Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the lord thy god giveth thee.

The sampler measures 14″ x 12″, with the frame 18″ x 16″
