Fanny Peachey, circa 1800
De-accessioned from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this delightful sampler has been professionally conserved by museum staff. It’s not in great condition, it isn’t framed, but it has been stabilized. It features a four sided floral border, with Adam and Eve as the focal point alongside a tree of life with a realistic raised work serpent climbing the tree. The couple is flanked by dogs, chickens, stags, evergreen trees, flowering vines, potted plants, and flying birds.
The verse, with many misspellings:
Our father ate forbidden fruit
And from his Glory fell
And we his children thus were
Broight (brought) to death And near to hell
This antique has been reproduced as a sampler by the Scarlet Letter.
