Emily Jane Brook, circa 1848

This antique is SOLD.

This English sampler has been stitched on a linen canvas with wool threads, featuring naturalistic sprays of flowers, a large mansion house flanked by a farmer and his wife, a windmill on a hill, and two gorgeous enormous swans on either side of a miniature village scene. Below this is a larger section of the village view, all within a four sided floral border. The verse, a common one on nineteenth century samplers, is as follows:

Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand
As the first effort of an infant’s hand
And while her fingers on the canvas move
Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love
With thy dear children let her have a part
And write thy name thyself upon her heart

Below the verse there is a beautiful carnation pattern band. The sampler is in excellent condition, and the gorgeous frame is likely original. It measures 23″ x 25″, or 27″ x 29-1/2″ to the outer edges of the frame.
