Ellenore Swornsbourne aged 13 years, circa 1810

This antique is SOLD.

This sampler has been stitched on very fine tiffany type linen using cross, double running, satin, and petit point stitches in still vibrant shades of olive green, gold, navy blue, rose, brown, and medium blue. It depicts a small “mansion” house flanked by pots of flowers, stags, and a wee lion beneath the house, all surrounded by a four sided floral border. The upper third displays four lines of illuminated letters with some unique interpretations of traditional numerals. The verse is:

Teach me to feel another’s woe:
To hide the faults I see.
That mercy I to others show.
That mercy show to me.

It is framed in an older frame, probably not the period of the sampler. Apart from a slight loss to the linen in the lower right corner the sampler is in excellent condition. The sampler measures 15″ x 12″, with the frame it measures 18-1/2″ x 15-1/2″
