ELIZABETH FOSTER 1747
English sampler stitched in silk on fine tammy cloth retaining excellent color with two rows of alphabets and three beautiful floral pattern bands with three verses interspersed.
The sampler has suffered some losses but is now carefully mounted over modern linen that blends very well with the original ground. There is damage to the borders where it must have been roughly removed from its original mounting and frame, and thinning areas throughout, but the color is very fresh.
The small narrow cartouche in the center of the third floral pattern band reads:
Learn to excel in doing well
Stitches used in the sampler are cross, petit point, counted satin, and eyelet. The workmanship is extraordinarily fine. (I would love to reproduce this sampler but time does not permit.)
The sampler itself measures 8-1/4″ x 12-1/4″, with the frame it is 15″ x 10-3/4″
