Elizabeth Alford

Very fine English sampler with a large central motif of elaborately cross-stitched roses, with pious verses on either side. Adam and Eve are stitched at the top with cherubs flying above them along with the moon and stars, elaborate crowns, and evergreen trees on either side. There are two brick houses in the lower register with beautifully worked horizontal satin stitched bands below them. The attribution is flanked by two large goats! There are minor losses to the linen ground, excellent color, and overall condition. Stitches used are counted satin, cross, and bargello (in the tree trunks on either side of her name). Sampler alone 20″20″, with frame (figured maple) 23″ x 23″.
