Dona Dorotea Gazano, circa 1850
A spectacular Spanish sampler featuring many traditional motifs including a crowned lion, leaping stag, dogs both running and sitting, a cornucopia, a chicken, small vignettes of farms, a church, and a memorial, birds, baskets, flowers, a ewer, two alphabets and numerals stitched in both Arabic and Roman in the upper half. The lower half consists of floral and maze patterns in a variety of stitches including counted satin, cross, back, herringbone and double running. It measures 16″ x 21″ in an older frame, very good condition with minor fading and a few tiny holes in the background linen that do not interfere with the stitched designs.
