Ann Marshal 1797
ANN MARSHAL 1797 Scottish sampler framed in an old oak frame with gilt slip, mounted to conservator standards on acid free board with spacers. The sampler is stitched with silk and fine wool on linen in a variety of stitches. It is signed and dated “Ann Marshal Aged 13 years my sampler sewed in the year 1797″ along the left side, vertically. The lower half features a traditional Scottish motif: birds drinking at the fountain of life. Illuminated lettering, peacocks and crowns are also often seen on Scottish samplers like this quaint example. Stitches used are cross, eyelet, double running and satin. 12″ x 17-1/2″ sampler, with frame 15″ x 21”.
