AGNES BINNIE 1824

Scottish sampler made in Linlithgow, West Lothian, in 1824.

Agnes Binnie was born in nearby Stirling on March 22nd, 1808. Her father was Robert Binnie, age 45, and her mother was Mary Addie, age 34. At the age of 23 Agnes married James Barclay on March 16th, 1832, in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Together they had at least six sons and three daughters. Around 1870 Agnes and James moved to Scotland Township in McDonough, Illinois.

She is buried in Macomb, McDonough, Illinois. The stitches she used on her band sampler, executed with silk threads on a homespun linen, include cross, four sided, eyelet, queen, straight, double running and back.

The sampler measures 10″ x 16″ and is in very good condition, in a 20th century frame.
