Description
ELISABETH 1629 FROM THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM IN CAMBRIDGE ENGLAND
This is the earliest dated sampler in the Fitzwilliam’s collection. It consists of nine bands, eight of horizontal, repeating floral border patterns, the first one featuring boxers presenting stylized fruit motifs. The boxers in this sampler are early examples that appear almost vegetative rather than human. This corrupted human form gradually evolved during the seventeenth century into a fully clothed fashion plate, but it had its roots in this stylized vegimorphic creature.
