Description

This sampler, from the collection of Witney Antiques in Witney, Oxfordshire, England, was featured in their December 1996 exhibit Samplers: All Creatures Great and Small. This work is extremely fine, well balanced, and accomplished, particularly for a 10-year old, featuring a heraldic lion and a unicorn, with two crowned cherubs supporting a crown of life beneath the Lord’s Prayer and over the attribution. The lion, unicorn, and some strawberry and floral motifs are cross, queen, or satin stitched, then outlined in a darker color in double running stitch, a 17th century technique that defines and accentuates these shapes.
