Description
CONTINENTAL SAMPLER, unsigned, circa 1850
Two rows of alphabets and one row of numerals are executed in cross stitch with wool on coarse linen in this primitive sampler. The symbolic depictions of a windmill, ladder, basket, celestial forms and a church suggest a continental origin. A woman in a blue dress stands in the lower right corner, a large blue gate at the left corner, with plants, trees, pots and a small church stitched between them across the bottom.
The newer birdseye maple veneer frame is quite handsome and in very good condition. The sampler measures 21″ x 11″, with the frame it is 24-1/2″ x 14″. Losses, fading.
