Description

ANN WARD
Made in 1808 in Chester County, Pennsylvania
A Quaker sampler made in Chester County, Pennsylvania (genealogical research in process), stitched with silk on a homespun linen ground using cross stitches over one and two threads of linen, eyelets, counted satin and queen stitches.  The sampler is generally in very good condition apart from fading, and a section in the upper third center, above the Roman style alphabet, which has deteriorated.
The inscription is:
Wrought by the above name
in the __the year of her age 1808
Her age could be 7 (unlikely because of the sophistication of the needlework) or 11.
The sampler was framed at a later date in an older figured maple frame.  It has been stitched over a piece of similar linen.  The sampler itself measures 10″ x 12-1/2″.  With the frame the outer dimensions are 14-1/2″ x 16-1/2″.
