| This magnificent Scottish sampler was made in Auchterarder, in the Tayside Region of Scotland, northwest of Edinburgh. Such distinctive motifs seen on this and other obviously related samplers point to the existence of a school or influential teacher in the region, although her name and the exact location of the school have not yet been discovered. The colors on the original sampler are virtually unfaded and are as pleasing to the modern eye as they were to its original maker. Classic Scottish characteristics include the majestic illuminated lettering (undoubtedly family initials), and strongly horizontal and stylized mansion house, the tree pyramids at the bottom, and the ubiquitous peacocks. | |
