A sampler using 18th and 19th century painted and stitched elements
This sampler was inspired by two
discoveries: the verse found on an early nineteenth century American
sampler, and the house, on an anonymous eighteenth century American
watercolor painting. The two have been merged into a cohesive design
enclosed by a four-sided stylized berry border. The six line verse is
followed by an epitaph from an early eighteenth century English tombstone.
When every letter with judgement
is placed
Exactly proportion'd and prettily spaced
A Sampler resembles an elegant mind
Whose passions by reason subdued and refin'd
Move only in lives of affection and duty
Reflecting a picture of order and beauty
Lean not on earth. T'will
pierce thee to the heart.
Stitches used are cross and a small
amount of counted satin. On 35 count linen the finished sampler will measure
approximately 17-1/2" x 18-1/2".
