SUN & MOON
MINIATURE SAMPLER CIRCA
1815
This elaborate miniature sampler is of English origin, and was originally stitched over two threads on a slightly uneven weave fine tammy (wool) ground of approximately 50 threads to the inch. While most extant miniature samplers of this period are largely monochromatic, or consist only of very simple designs (alphabets, brief slogans), this one is quite ambitious with its involved three-tiered scene, with a four-sided Greek fretwork border.
