Cornelia Ann Vanderveer

1835

Cornella Ann Vanderveer - 1809

This American sampler was likely stitched in New York State. The lovely carnations in the border, stylized trees and baskets of flowers, show some design influence from the Quaker schools that flourished there in the early nineteenth century. Three separate verses, all of them with spelling, syntactical and grammatical errors, are worked onto the sampler, as well as two symmetrical, five-ranked Adam-style houses. Stitches used are cross, cross over one, and Irish.
