MARGARET RANDOLPH
1826

A PHILADELPHIA SAMPLER

Stitched when she was just seven years old, Margaret Randolph's sampler displays various traditional spot motifs including paired birds, flowers, trees and butterflies, all surrounding a central wreath with an inscription. The initials WR and AR within the wreath are her parents', William and Ann Evans Randolph. Margaret was born in 1819 in Philadelphia, and died in 1888. This reproduction of her sampler is worked entirely in cross stitch. The original sampler is in the collection of the Allentown Art Museum in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a gift of Mrs. William P. Hacker.
