SARAH STUART 1798 |
|
Still retaining its original bright color,
Sarah Stuart's silk sampler displays many of the traditional
devices associated with samplers of the later eighteenth and
early nineteenth centuries. A row of honeysuckle border begins
the sampler, followed by alphabet and numeral tests and a verse.
Flying angels support a crown, flanked by potted flowers and
birds. The most appealing feature of this sampler is perhaps
the large red brick building at the bottom, atop its fine tiered
lawn, surrounded by free-form trees, a deer and birds. |
