So much research remains to be done on the origins,
schools, and teachers of English sampler making. Elements of design that
must have come from the genius of particular teachers are identifiable on
many samplers made with specific time periods, yet rarely is a teacher, or a
location, cited on the sampler itself. This sampler was inspired by designs
found on a group of English samplers made prior to 1772, which include the
position and dress of the shepherdess, the design of the cow, sheep, and
squirrel, and the vibrant colors.
Stitches used in this sampler are cross and
tent. Thirty-three colors of floss are required, a total of eighty-three
skeins, hence the price tag! Worked on 35 count linen, the finished sampler
will measure approximately 18-1/4" x 17", and it is recommended for
intermediate to advanced stitchers. |
