OPTICAL DESIGN BARGELLO PANEL
CIRCA 1740
|
When we acquired the
original needlework from which this was reproduced, it was framed in an early-to-mid eighteenth century Hogarth style frame, and was mounted on its original wooden backing. We dated it to around 1740, and speculate its function might have been as an
upholsterer's sample; or perhaps it was designed to adorn the back side of a hand-held or tabletop fire screen, or a mirror. It was in an amazing state of preservation, and the colors you see here are reproduced exactly from the front of the antique panel. The only stitch required is Irish stitch. (We have made our panel into a cushion, but it lends itself to many different decorative uses.)
